At first the author defines St. Anthony's Sermons again as materia predicabilis offerred to his fellow friars. Then, starting from an article published in 1981 on the relation between Anthonian sermons and liturgical books, he investigates the chronology of these sermons through the inteipretation and analysis of the liturgical customs of that time. According to the author's theory, they might have been started on 11th February, 1224, with the first section (as far as the sermon of the 7th Dom. post Pent.) composed in Italy within the first months of 1227. Likewise, the four sermons dedicated to Mary may have been outlined around 1224, once again in Italy. The third section (13th-24th Dom. post Pent.) and the fourth (1st Adv. Dom.- 4th Dom. post Epif.) might have been written in France, where Anthony was the Custodian of Limoges. On the basis of the historical tradition and the Assidua, the feast - day sermons dating back to the second half of 1230 till the first half of 1231 weve composed in Padua and were left unfinished because of the Saint's death.

Concordantia in the Sermones Dominicales of Antony of Padua
II.99.12.03

One of the most characteristic features of St. Anthony's "Sermones Dominicales" is his use of the terms "concordare" and "concordantia" to refer to a harmony of Biblical passages. A detailed study of the work suggests that this usage was an original development by the Saint, which he arrived at in the course of composition. When we examine the Old Testament "concordances" in particular, we are led to ask on what principles Anthony selected them, and what was the basis of comparison. Examples from historical narrative, wisdom literature and prophetic writings are considered. In part, it looks as if Anthony's purpose was to counter the Cathar claim that the Hebrew Scripture, like the material world in general, was the work of the Evil One; but beside this polemical purpose, Antony found the method of concordance a powerful tool in developing his Biblical message for ordinary people, providing vivid and memorable images for the truths of faith and of morality.

St. Anthony, who was baptized Fernando Martins de Bulhões, was born in Lisbon during the reign of the second king of Portugal - a nation which had obtained indipendence in the 12th century -. At that time, within the Chapters of the cathedrals, some schools existed where the priest-to be were educated. St. Anthony attended that of the cathedral in Lisbon, where he studied grammar, rhetoric and dialetics - at least their imdiments - for about eight years. When he was fifteen, Fernando entered the monastery of St. Vincent de Fora (i.e. out of the walls of the old Lisbon) belonging to the order of the Canons Regular founded by St. Augustine. When he finished his novitiate, he made his profession of faith. After that, he began to be disturbed by his old friends and relatives while he was studying or doing good works; for this reason, two years later he asked to be transferred to the monastery of the Holy Cross in Coimbra, belonging to the Canons Regular. At that time, the monastery was at the height of its splendour; there, the friars devoted themselves in particular to the study of holy an secular sciences and Fernando was given holy orders. We do not have any reliable information about his teachers, but, thanks to the rich inventaries of the libraries, we know the names of some famous priests in the cathedral of Lisbon and those of some religious men in the monasteries of St. Vincent and of the Holy Cross; they might have been Fernando's teachers. Moreover, by the comparison with St. Anthony's quotations in his Sermones, we can also reconstruct and, in part, judge the 13th century Portuguese culture. As a matter of l'act, the Sermones convey St. Anthony's profound biblical and theological knowdledge, which he had with no doubt assimilated in the above-mentioned schools.

The recent edition of the catalogue of the manuscripts kept in the Augustinian monastery in S. Cruz of Coimbra (Portugal) and the analysis of the methods used for their cataloguing has given the author of this article the opportunity of pointing out the usefulness of such catalogues as this one, in which manuscripts of different provenance are presented all together. Many of the above-mentioned were realized in the "scriptorium" of the monastery of Coimbra; they are very important because they make us understand the way in which texts were transmitted and how different forms of writing denoted various cultural influences.

Till now, St. Anthony's sequence "Ad honorem Trinitatis" has been spread and edited only in the 15th-century version of the Franciscan mass-book of Salzburg, which is kept in the National Library of Vienna (lat. 3795). This article concerns an unknown code dating back to 1252, in which the above-mentioned text is much longer and accompanied by musical notes. This small, miscellaneous, parchment code is catalogued as Q5 and kept among the literary and musical treasures of the Centro Civico Bibliografico in Bologna. It was discovered in the Library of the Academy of Music (now the Conservatory) "G.B. Martini" in Bologna thanks to the personal notes left by the great musicologist Ugo Sesini, who had been the librarian of that academy from 1933 to 1938.

Note di lettura
II.99.12.07

St. Bonaventure's sermon "Iste pauper clamavit" - published in the volume IX of his Opera Omnia - is no longer considered by the critics as the work of the Franciscan Master. F. V. Gamboso has published a new edition of this sermon. The author of this study presents the investigation which is being carried on and points out that this sermon gives a description of St. Anthony which disagrees with the hagiographic criteria of the second half of the 13th century. The present investigation has raised some doubts on the authenticity of a certain number of sermones attributed to St. Bonaventure up to now. These doubts open a new field of research: St. Bonaventure's influence on the preachers of the end of the 13th century and of the beginning of the 14th century.

Il minorita inglese Giovanni Foxholes maestro scotista e arcivescovo (ca. 1415-1475)
II.99.12.09

This article deals with the figure of the English Minorite John Foxholes, Foxall, Foxhal (ca. 1415-1475), who was the archbishop of Armagh when he died. The article is divided into three parts and it concerns his magistral training and activity in the Studia of Oxford, Cologne, Erfurt and then in Bologna and Rome. It also points out that for about six years it was not clear whether he juridically belonged either to the Conventual Order or to the Observants but then this problem has been solved. All the works already known by Foxholes are here listed together with their bibliography. In his works, the influence of late Duns Scoto's doctrine can be recognized; till now, however, they have not been sufficiently appreciated.

The pubblication of "Regesta Ordinis" 1 (1989) and 2 (1998) of the Minor Conventual Friars and of "Regesta Observantiae Cismontanae" (1984) has given the author of this article the opportunity of dealing with the troubled history of the Franciscans between the 15th and the 16th c., when they separated into different juridical Orders. The author makes a comparison between the two aspects of Franciscanism, the historical one with its traditions and organization, and the latest one which has to do with the Observants.

Francesco e il demonio. La guarigione della donna di Sangemini
II.99.12.11

This article deals with an episode from the life of St. Francis which was narrated for the first time by Tommaso of Celano in his Vita beati Francisci. This investigation points out that Tommaso faithfully reported the event; moreover, the way in which St. Francis is said to have reacted to the devil once again reveals that his cultural condition was no doubt different from that of the theologians. Enrico d'Avranches and Giuliano of Spira altered Tommaso's text; later on, the Vita by Giuliano influenced Tommaso himself, when he started lo write the "Tractatus de miraculis". A different interpretation of the above-mentioned fact was also given by Bonaventure. It follows that this study not only underlines a particular aspect of St. Francis' culture, but it also opens new prospects to the "Franciscan question".

The almost unknown figure of f. Giuseppe Antonio Marcheselli, ofmconv. (1676-1742) is presented in this article after long archive research. From Casalmaggiore (Cremona) - where he had been born - he arrived in Assisi in 1701; he lives a there till his death, except for a short period spent in Rome as the guardian of the SS. Apostoli community. He was a preacher and a writer of short catechetic and pastoral works, which were published until well into the 19th century. He is often mentioned in documents together with Angela del Giglio (1658-1736), with whom he founded a "charitable house" which was then turned into a convent school and later into a monastery until the present house of the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Assisi. Pieces of information till now unpublished give also the author the opportunity of presenting the cofounder and of dealing with the development of that institution in Assisi where it is taught and which follows the spiritual tradition of the Franciscan Tertiary Order.

La Biblioteca di S. Francesco in Ravenna
II.99.12.13

We do not know with precision the date of the foundation of the Franciscan library in Ravenna; however we know that one century after the construction of the convent the chronicler Salimbene da Parma already found a Studio with students and a lecturer. As a result of the Napoleonic suppression of the religious orders, the manuscripts and the old editions kept in the library were either lost or transferred to the Civica Biblioteca Classense. The oldest inventory that we known dates back to 1679, but also f. Giovanni Giacinto Sbaraglia and f. Giovanni Montanari dealt with the library and its codes in their works, the latter in his 18th century monograph on the convent of Ravenna. The old library was confiscated, partly undersold and partly lost. When the Franciscans went back to Ravenna in 1949, they opened a new library, specialized in Dante and his works. The poet had met the Franciscans during the last years of his life - when he had already been sent into exile. Thev had officiated at the poet's funeral service and hidden his mortal remains in Ravenna, when Florence wanted to get them there. Nowadays the new library contains more then 11.000 volumes - most of them about dantesque matter - in addition to various manuscripts and ten incunabula of the Divina Commedia. This section remains the most important in the library, since nothing else of that kind exists in that area, while a new Franciscan section is being opened and it will contain volumes on lhe histon of the Order. The library has been opened to the public for some years and lately the number of its volumes has remarkably increased. Now it is being restructuted and connected to the provincial library computer network, so that it will soon offer to everybody the access to its book property.

The recent restoration of the paintings by Altichiero in the Oratory of St. George in Padua has permitted to examine the succession of the various days of work, the engraving marks, the impression of cords on the fresh plaster, of compasses and of the free-hand lines, the traces of pouncing (this is quite exceptional in frescos dating back to 1387), the painting structure, the brush work, the rich chromatism of each figure and the design of the architectonics. Some characteristic features of these frescoes have been represented by diagrams (days of works, pouncing, etc.), while other elements such as the brush work, can only be described in writing by now. Each of the 550 figures in the 22 scenes have been described in detail: the colours of preparation, the chromatic impastos, the brush work, the way of defining graphically the figures and of carrying out the complex architectonics. The refined painting by Altichiero is not entirely done in good fresco, but this painter availed himself of devices such as the addition to the pigments of small percentages of substances which allowed the painter to work on the same surface for a longer time and make the painting more glossy. Almost all the figures were executed starting from a schematic brush drawing in yellow ochre, according to the rules of medieval fresco techniques. This study offers new elements for the investigation on the different artists who may have worked in the yard of the Oratory of St. George.

This article deals with the new expanded editions of the 19th century documents concerning the restoration of the frescoes in the Oratory of St. George. The author underlines and praises the method applied by Ernst Förster (1837), who helped to root a new idea in Padua about the preservation of old paintings. Giovanni Battista Monici kept to this rigorous respect for the originai paintings when he restored them again in 1844.

This article starts from a re-interpretation of the history of the 14th century Paduan painting written by Michele Savonarola in the 1440s, emphasizing its novelty in the history of artistic literature. It also points out that Michele Savonarola developed his intellectual and socially prestigious idea of painting during the rule of the da Carrara family. After examining the development of painting under Giotto's influence in the second half of the 14th century, this article deals with those features which Savonarola considered peculiar of painting in the da Carrara age: the widespread pictorial activity, the various clients who commissioned pictorial cycles, the complexity of their contents, which often implied the work of an inventor - this role has been attribuited to Lombardo della Seta for St. James' Chapel. In particular, the author has dwelt upon the political and dynastic messages and on the ways of representing them, and has proposed to read the last stories of St. James in the Lupi Chapel and those about Luca Belludi in the Conti Chapel in the light of the ascent of the da Carrara family to power - the liberation of the town from the foreign rule - and of the impending of the Venetian menace. Moreover, in the Lupi Chapel the mortai remains of Pietro Rossi - the liberator of the town - were kept and Luca Belludi was known as Ezzelino da Romano's proud censor in the history of Padua. In conclusion, Michele Savonarola expressed the intellectual framework in which figurative arts developed during the rule of the da Carrara family.

This article examines a series of documents - most of them dating back to the second half of the 15th century - concerning the construction of chapels and altars in the church adjoining to the convent of St. Francis in Conegliano, belonging to the Friars Minor Conventual. Starting from the early construction of the beginning of the 15th century, the complex was later on enlarged and became an important centre for the different religious communities living there. Famous religious men were given hospitality in this "quasi-city" and a rich series of works of art was collected in its church. Today, only a courtyard has remained of the old complex and, thanks to the documents and two drawings dating back to the 17th and 18th century respectively, also the interior arrangement of the church has been approximately reconstructed: in the apse, there may have been one chapel on each side of the main one and others along the aisles; two more chapels had been opened along the aisles and dedicated to St. Christopher and to St. Anthony of Padua.

The four 16th-century Graduals examined in this article make up a unitary casus of richly illustrated and decorated liturgical texts, which were commissioned by the Franciscan Rinaldo Graziani and are now kept in the Public Library of Bagnacavallo. Till now, scholars have occasionally mentioned these manuscripts and have vaguely recognized their miniatures as the work of an artist from Bologna. Only recently, Ulrike Baur-Eberhardt has devoted her attention to these graduals and she has come to the conclusion that they are an example of figurative culture typical of Bologna. She has also ascribed their miniatures and their ornamentation to Giovanni Battista Cavalletto and his san Scipione respectively. But this attribution has seemed at least debatable; for this reason, the author of the article has taken the problem into consideration again and made a deeper investigation. The manner of the artist known as the master of the Graduals of Bagnacavallo - to whom the whole codes might be ascribed - shows not only some affinity with Giovanni Battista Cavalletto's style even though this is much more elevated - but, above all, a new element more deeply linked to the precious activity of the painter Bartolomeo Ramenghi from Bagnacavallo, as Angelo Mazza has recently assumed. These miniatures also show some correspondence of taste and style with works made within the first decade of the 16th century; for this reason we propose to anticipate the date of their realization in comparison with the date of their donation - i.e. 1518, as the codes attest. Besides, particular attention has been paid to their rich ornamentation and it has been compared with that of other contemporaiy manuscripts made in Bologna: among them, the beautiful Rotuli dello studio.

Una tavoletta olandese del sec. XVII al Museo Antoniano
II.99.12.19

After the spreading of Calvinism, great religious painting almost disappeared in Holland, whilst religious subjects cominued into the 17th c. thanks to small paintings used for private worship.
Rembrandt painted many of these and this painting was done by one of his students. The chiaroscuro atmosphere, the objects and the characters are to be found in the Dutch Painter's work in the period between 1630-1640. On the other hand, the smooth style of painting and the light are nearer to the refined style of Gerrit Dou, the first student of Rembrandt in Leids and the head teacher of the so called "fijnschilders-fine painters".
Franciscan subjects are rare in Dutch painting. The subject of this painting was much loved in the 17th c. by followers of Caravaggio.

The article opens with a brief description of the origin and of the peculiarities of the musical composition known as "oratorio" and then it deals with the numerous oratorio librettos written from 1680 to 1715, concerning St. Anthony's figure. These oratorios were written within the Franciscan Order with the intention of exalting this saint. The oratorio is one of the expressions of the Anthonian veneration and devotion, in particular in the chief town of Lombardia, where the newspaper "Gazzetta di Milano" spread the news of their performance.

Francescantonio Vallotti: un aggiornamento bibliografico
II.99.12.22

The authoress investigates into the iconographic and symbolic importance of the heart and she lingers upon the figure of the Paduan bishop St. Gregorio Barbarigo (1625-1697), in the three-hundredth anniversary of his death. The authoress points out that the word heart occurs frequently even in Barbarigo's preaches and that it may also have various symbolic connotations, each one connected with a specific event: for example, she mentions the circumstance in which the embalmed heart of the bishop saint was donated to the diocesan seminary of Padua. This article gives the opportunity of investigating into the origin of heart-shaped reliquaries and of panegyrics in which, according to the occasion, the heart is given a different symbolic meaning.
