Corpus Rhetoricum Antonianum
II.08.12.01

Cristo é a chave, a inteligência, a escada, o pedagogo deste novo tempo e deste novo reino.
A quem comunica?

In saint Anthony the rhetorical and hermeneutic techniques are evident, they structure and order both his thinking and his text, but the preacher assumes a distinctive role in the rhetorical argument: it seems that the performative character of the preaching is based in the authority of the one who preaches, as the preacher is the word or the preaching itself, but also in the grace that is granted to those who listen, i.e. to the audience. It seems, thus, that the rational proof or argument is less important than the testimony or exemplum. But it is not so: the Holy Writ itself demands many times the rational resource and argument when it makes the preacher and audience face complex realities or symbolic messages that have to be understood, such as the concepts derivative of soteriology and scatology.
Thus, the Saint is presented simultaneously, as a rhetorical and anti-rhetorical author: to the antonian preaching it isn’t sufficient the eloquence of Cicero nor the science of Aristotle, but the meditation and the preacher’s life of martyrdom in order that the preached word may become efficient, i.e., be performative. This would be the fundamental characteristic of the antonian eloquence, word and message. To give oneself to the last consequences by the word, because of the Word is the maximum act of the Christian testimony: what makes the preached word performative and efficient is the preacher’s life, work and testimony. This is the true concept of the antonian preacher. All the rest are shots without bullets: they stun, but they do not pass through or injure the souls of the reader and the listener.
A study of the sermons from the rhetorical system reveals in its textual structure a mystical that communicates and wishes to communicate himself, with a fundamental preoccupation: to lead pedagogically and persuasively all men to the mountain of contemplation or make them all climb the Scale Jacobi, where Christ is / lies.
The textual structure and the content of the sermons allow having a glimpse of a dynamic, soteriological time category that invites the reader and the listener to enter in a new quality, scatological time, a time of Christological concentration. Christ is the key, the intelligence, the ladder, the pedagogue of this new time and of this new reign. This is the fundamental message of the Opus Evangelorium: the building and communication of a weltanschanng and of a human pedagogy in which the Word and the Symbol are the revelation of another reality also real, but spiritual.
The corpus rhetoricum applied in the sermons allows to make a hermeneutic of the Scriptures with the aim of attaining the longed for sacer intellectus or intelligence of the Scriptures in order to persuade and teach pedagogically the various audiences. The rhetoric, by its structure and division, applied to the preaching makes the communication and the teaching of the Holy Writ easier: what is communicated (the Scripture): who communicates it? How does he communicate? To whom does he communicate?
To conclude, at the basis of the Opus Evangelorium is a Corpus Rhetoricum with the characteristics and influences of a long rhetorical Greco-Latin, biblical, patristic tradition to which the Saint has added the liturgical mark of the Quadriga, modifying, intentionally, the usual place of Prayer as was recommended by the Artes Praedicandi of his time. This is the major contribution the Saint gives too the Artes Praedicandi.

Bonaventura de Iseo was a friar of immense influence in the Franciscan Order about the middle of the XIII century. After having spent some years in Provence as Provincial Minister, he was represented Crescenzio da Iesi, General Minister, at the first Council in Lyon in 1245. This brought him into close contact with the most important intellectuals of his years, who were at Innocent IV’s court. After Crescenzio’s deposition and the election as general minister of John of Parma, Bonaventura became socius of the new General, travelling with him to Greece and during his journeys at the Italian convents. In 1248 he was elected provincial minister in Marca Trevigiana, but Salimbene repeats the belief that he was too friendly with the tyrannical Ecelinus de Romano. As provincial minister he spent his years incessantly travelling in and out the Province, ending his life about 1280, in Venice. The last mention of his name occurs in 1273. Several sermons, Festivi et de Tempore are attributed to Bonaventure da Iseo.
They are preserved in two collections of manuscripts, both in the Biblioteca Antoniana in Padua (mss. 442-447), the former from the middle of the XIV century, while the latter is assigned towards the end of that century. The author of this article, having presented an overview of the history of these manuscripts in the catalogues of the Library, turns the attention to the historiography concerning the production of the homilies by this friar, developed, above all, in Padua thanks to scholars as Sartori, Marangon, Costa and Gaffuri, and, with a continuous reference to the sermons, tries to introduce the question about their composition and their function. This article sketches the main lines to solve the difficult problem of the relationship between the two series and explains how the scribe who copied the later series was more interested in finding materials for his own preaching. For this reason he chose some excerpta and passages of the sermons, and even if he copied the entire sermon, he didn’t feel himself bound to the letter of the text. About the earlier series, the writer focuses how Bonaventura’s sermons are a work structured to be an aid and a model for preachers in the Order, that’s why they appear as a complex framework of patristic and scriptural quotations, apt to satisfy each need of a friar during his activity. At the end, after having expressed the wish to go on with the study and comprehension of Bonaventura da Iseo’s work, the scholar has a rapid exposition for the other work attributed to this Franciscan friar, this one concerning alchemy: the Liber Compostella, but she contains her reflections to the bibliography produced concerning this curious book.

During the last decades, art historians dealt increasingly with saints’ tomb, notably with shrines supported by columns or caryatids. Many scholars attributed a pivotal role in the spreading of this typology to the tomb erected for saint Dominic between 1264 and 1267 in the church of San Domenico in Bologna. The importance of this monument is certainly crucial, but a more articulated analysis of the historical development may be proposed. In fact, shrines raised on columns or caryatids were particularly suitable for keeping saints’ remains, both for symbolic and for functional reasons. That’s way raised tombs were largely used to this end overall Europe during the 12th and 13th centuries. Nonetheless, the use of a raised freestanding sarcophagus for a saint’s body was not the only choice in Italy, during 13th and 14th centuries. In some regions, other typologies were favoured, notably in Tuscany, where saints’ tombs were frequently wall tombs. Sarcophagi on columns or caryatids were overwhelmingly adopted in Veneto, Friuli and the regions facing the Adriatic Sea. Still existing monuments and saints’ tombs painted in contemporary panels show that in this area a particular model was often imitated, at least partially: the arca of saint Anthony of Padua, erected in 1263. Many shrines reproduced two typical characteristics of this tomb, the columns and the polychrome marbles.

«Veloci calamo recollegi».

The theme of reportatio can be regarded as another aspect of history of homiletics that is worthy of close study, to analyze different modes of reception of words preached from the pulpit. By examining the life of Daniele da Porcìa, a notary who lived in Padua during the first half of the XVth century, and his activity as a reportator of the Lenten sermons preached by san Bernardino da Siena in 1423 and 1443, it’s possible to reach a clearer understanding of the preaching and permanence of the saint in Padua, as well as, through serious analysis of texts, the difficulties the reportator had to overcome to produce a good-quality transcription. The presence of these elements confirm how the study of reportationes is an important instrument for evaluating the success of a sermon when preached to a secular audience.

It’s not an essay on Franciscan thought, nor on the relations between philosophy and Franciscanism. Actually it deals with different ways in which some philosophers were inspired by Francisco himself for their conception of contingency, free will, making of human being, love, body, history, light, nature, God. It starts from Gilles Delenze’s approach and german Romanticism and Idealism, goes through “Suspicion’s Masters” and it gets at Bergson and Existentialism. Particularly it concentrates upon early german phenomenology (Max Scheler), which worked out for the first time philosophical speech in the strict sense on Francisco. In the final part it evaluates without rhetoric how Francisco’s actual life – not reducible to the different and sometimes conflictual ways of Franciscan philosophy – could give a fundamental spiritual framework to christian life style, action and thought.

La formazione teologica nell’Istituto Sant’Antonio Dottore (Padova, 1957-2007)
II.08.12.06

The commemoration remembers the 50th anniversary of theological studies at St. Anthony the Doctor’s Institute (Padua), developed in five stages, from a little provincial seminary to a college affiliated to St.Bonaventure’s Theological Faculty (Rome), later as an institutional course of Padua’s section of the Theological Faculty of Milan, than partner of Padua’s newborn Theological Faculty of the ‘Triveneto’, with the imminent introduction of the Masters Degree in Spiritual Theology. The juridical structure’s progress of the Institute narrates the difficulties and the continious renewal of the ‘Ratio Studiorum’, especially in conforming the studies to the new form of the ‘intellectus fidei’, after the Second Vatican Council’s transfer from the Tridentine school’s Theology. Giving light also to the work of various rectors, the various culutural activities, the professors’ principal publications, the lay students’ problematic, the government of the religious Province of St.Anthony appriciates the Theological Institute.

In a recent Alberto Forni’s essay Pier di Giovanni Ulivi, lately object of special studies, is presented as Dante’s “master”. According to Forni the poet would have transposed into verses the thought of the exegesist-theologist: “The Divina Commedia is the metamorphosis of Piero di Giovanni Olivi’s Lectura super Apocalipsim”. Starting from this statement, Nessi resumes friar’s suffered incidents within Franciscan order and, most of all, the inclusion of a portrait of him in Benozzo Gozzoli’s frescos (1452) inside S. Francesco church in Montefalco (Perugia), which records the beginning of his official revaluation. Further it is remarked the presence of Teologus Dantes nullius dogmatis expers’s portrait in the same context.
